Sounds very interesting and more interesting than I was anticipating if I'm being honest.
Why couldn't Apple give the 50th anniversary of Revolver the same treatment last year?
I find their overall marketing strategy completely baffling.
Oh well, maybe there'll be a White Album deluxe box set to look forward to next year (although somehow, I doubt it)

    Wow!

Let's hope the vinyl has better dynamic range…

I think there will be no more complete releases that way, I would love to hear material from the 1969 era, with everything there is bootleg, but of higher quality sound, I have a question, someone has by chance the box set in digital to share ?

  5. Westfield says:

A little disappointed on some of the materials being identical to the material already available on boots. I want new stuff. My wish is just open the vaults and release it all.

The 5.1 reviewer on the link given said, "I have to admit, I was initially surprised at how bright the new recording sounded, but as I've given it repeat listens I realize that phenomenon was more about my ear getting acclimated to the increased detailing and lack of distortion, hiss and other sonic anomalies present in all prior versions than any problem with the recording."

This is exciting. Perhaps the reviewer in the current article listened only once and found it loud and lacking dynamic range–maybe too "bright"– because she didn't listen to it more than once? I find it hard to believe that Giles, Paul, et.al. would make an egregious mistake on this new release by making it too loud or somehow mucking with it's dynamic range. But we will soon find out.

On dynamic range: The equipment you listen to a CD on, including the speakers, can have a tremendous impact on the sound quality; the equipment can highlight the music better than the junk we had years ago but it can also reveal its shortcomings. I have heard uncompressed bootlegs of the Beatles on bootlegs that have far better dynamic range than the final release. RIAA equalization and compression was put in because of the limits of high fidelity equipment (e.g. record players) and the fear of needle skipping or unplayablitiy on record players of the time. (If that's not right, experts please chime in.) I don't know why it wasn't removed to release the full dynamic range of older recordings.

Will definitely be buying this one….

Fascinating blog here: The people on the Sgt Pepper cover and their source photos… Even the waxworks and the gnome are there. Great stuff…

I'm not buying this commercial release, just download in flac the discs 2 and 3 to mash the tracks with my Purple Chick Sgt. Deluxe edition.

Peculiar that they didn't include 'Only A Northern Song', like Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane it was recorded during the same sessions.

Really flabbergasted that you claim to be all about The Beatles, and yet you can't spell the title correctly, even in your header.

Please fix this. Thank you. 🙂

Horrible, cold, hard sound. No dynamic range; fatiguing in the extreme. (DVD version, listened through reference Harbeth speakers.) Well done Giles.

Re the Penny Lane (Capitol Records U.S. Promo Single – Mono Mix). There was a sinles set released called "The US Singles Collection". The Penny Lane Promo Single was included in this set and is excellent quality. One has to wonder why this mix was not used with the Sgt Pepper's 50th release.

  16. Unknown says:

Further to my comment I have discovered that the CD set "The US Singles Collection" is a bootleg set. Still since the bootleg Penny Lane Promo Single is good quality it's surprising that the 50th anniversary version isn't at least as good.

Over all I am extremely happy with the super deluxe and I think Giles did a good job with the remix.

I agree with Matthew! Why didn't Revolver receive the same love last year? It's obvious how Sgt. Pepper is easier to market to younger generations. (They seem to sense anything psychedelic and jump in order to appear cool i.e. the Coachella crowd) A big to-do for Revolver's 50th anniversary would have bee a real treat for the hardcore fans.

I agree Anthology was the real gift, but I'm excited to check this out. Thanks for the review!
