The rise and fall and rise of the Let It Be film

After all of these years, I was wondering if there would be any hope of seeing the original made-for-TV edit prior to the film being reedited and lengthened for theatrical release. Presumably, at least a rough cut of the TV film version must have been made, as I always suspected the Get Back book that accompanied the album referred to that film version.

On the other hand, apparently there is unreleased footage that includes dialog of Paul discussing the merit of filming in 35mm as opposed to 16mm and then blowing it up to 35 for theatrical purposes. I don’t know why Paul would have been concerned about this if the project was in fact intended for TV.

But with all of the focus on the motion picture release, any information or insight into the original television version – as nature intended! – would very much be appreciated.

Thanks, and have a very happy new year.

So what if the COVID -19 goes well into 2021 will we still not be able to see it?

Great post! Thanks for the timeline. Having just watched again my unauthorized dvd copy from a few years ago, I agree with Paul. It shows a working band putting together some great music. And, as can be seen from the “sneak peek”, they had a lot of fun too. (not always, of course).

I know it was a fake press review, but I sure hope that I can skip past “ Plain Yoko Jam”. Ha!

    I can’t wait until it’s released!

If COVID-19 is still going on well into 2021 will the movie still be released then? And if not then what will happen to it?

Who knows. We’ll have to wait and see what is decided. I doubt it’d be shelved, yet again, it has happened before.

Very well done summary of the LIB saga! If Covid lingers, for sure they will postpone the release again. What better excuse? Some sadist(s) at Apple apparently enjoy this on again-off again release merry go round as shown in the summary above. No, seriously, by waiting this long, having Peter Jackson edit the footage, much improved technology in the 20 years in the conversion of the other footage to a watchable film with decent audio will hopefully (and finally) reward our patience. I hope they do indeed also offer the old LIB in a restored version as they talked about doing as well!

I recall seeing something online around the time ‘Naked’ was released. I can’t remember who wrote it or what site it was on, but it claimed that one of the special features on the ‘upcoming’ Let It Be DVD was a section named ‘Crossing The Road’. This was going to be January 69 footage of songs like Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Octopus’s Garden and Something made into actual promos to fit the actual Abbey Road tracks. But, if this was true, wouldn’t they have used them for the Abbey Road deluxe reissue in 2019?

After 50 years theyve been saying Let it be was The Beatles breaking up but Get Back was. when is Let it Be coming out?

[…] Unless of course, this will be an option on a future release of Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original “Let It Be” film. […]
