Beatleg EP series completed
UK record label Rhythm and Blues Records just announced the fourth and final volume of their 7-inch vinyl EP series with The Beatles, “From Us To You”, with material taken from the four radio specials The Beatles did for BBC. The series concentrates on the songs or tracks which didn’t appear on the official “Live at the BBC” compilations.
The EP series was released in reversed order, so it started with Vol. 4 and then came Vol. 3 and 2 before this final volume ending the series.
Here are the track lists and sleeve notes of each EP.
The Beatles – From Us To You #1 December 1963
After the conclusion of their fifteen-part BBC radio season Pop Go The Beatles, the group were invited back for a series of two-hour bank holiday specials under the title From Us To You. The first of these was recorded in the BBC Paris Studio on December 18th and broadcast on Boxing Day December 26th 1963. Television star Rolf Harris hosted the show and the Beatles accompanied him on a version of his 1960 hit Tie Me Kangaroo Down. (The track was considered for inclusion on “On Air – The Beatles Live at the BBC Vol 2”, but dropped as Harris was under investigation for pedophilia at the time. Ed.). Also appearing on the show was the boys’ favourite British rocker Joe Brown with his Bruvvers.

The Beatles From Us To You #2 March 1964
The second BBC bank holiday special From Us To You was recorded on 28th February 1964 at BBC Piccadilly Studios and broadcast on Easter Monday March 30th. It was hosted by light programme DJ Alan Freeman and featured the first ever performance of You Can’t Do That, which had only been recorded two days previously. The song was briefly considered for their next single, but was eventually relegated to the B-side of Can’t Buy Me Love, released on March 16th. Two bonus tracks, Boys and Long Tall Sally, are included here from the August 1964 show.

The Beatles From Us To You #3 May 1964
The Beatles returned to the BBC Paris Studio on May 1st for the third of their four From Us To You specials that would be broadcast on May 18th 1964. Three of the ten songs played were by their favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. Honey Don’t was later recorded for the Beatles For Sale album with Ringo on vocals. On this version however, John sings the lead. Sure To Fall was never committed to wax and features a ska break on the bridge, just like they played on I Call Your Name.

From Us To You #4 July 1964
The Beatles’ final From Us To You special was recorded at the BBC Paris Studio on July 17th and broadcast on August 3rd 1964. The nineteen-minute set they played was only a little shorter than their standard on the road live set during 1964. This 33rpm EP contains eight of the ten songs transmitted and offers a fascinating comparison with George Martin’s EMI productions. The arrangements are almost identical but on this recording, you can hear the individual guitars much more prominently than on the released versions.
