The new Lennon release

There will be a lot to quibble over with the track selection on this collection. E.g., nothing from Sometime in NYC except “Angela”?

  2. Winston Lennon says:

What about the tracks “New York City”, “John Sinclair” and “The Luck Of The Irish”???. “Come Together (live) and” Angela”are useless.

  3. Bobww says:

Yoko had to include something with her vocals on it. At least we don’t have to suffer through “Woman is the N***** of the World” again.

    • Peter Checksfield says:

Surely one of his greatest singles! Perhaps the word “nigger” is deemed unacceptable now, despite the point John was making?

  4. Paul says:

I only listened on my phone so that may explain this a little bit, but I don’t hear anything very diffferent from the original mix.

  5. Alf says:

They also released a compilation called Gimme Some Truth for Lennon’s 70th birthday. This is UnImaginative.

  6. G.D. Wilde says:

sounds very different to me. They’ve all but burried the piano in the mix, and all we get is drums/handclaps and vocals. But then again, this might be computer speakers …

  7. Juan says:

It is a new mix, there seems to be less distortion and cleaner.

  8. wavy-gravy says:

Same old stuff repackaged, ah well…

  9. Patrick Wouters says:

True to the originals but sound wise a big improvement. Tracklist is interesting for a new audience. Always good to interest new generations for the work of John Lennon. Thanks Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon.

  10. Clay says:

I was hoping (am still hoping) for POB. I am happy with tracks except live “Come Together.” At least “Angela” is its best version!

  11. Tony Littman says:

The live “Come Together” is a terrible performance – dreary, dull, lifeless, badly recorded… Skip.

  12. William Campbell says:

Hopefully there will be a reasonably priced high resolution stereo download of these remixes.

  13. Blakey says:

    No ‘Mother’ or ‘Crippled Inside’?
    Hardly definitive then, is it?

  14. Cole says:

It literally is painful how they keep repackaging his music. He’d be rolling if he could see that shit. He (and the other Beatles) always tried to give the fans the most bang for their buck. Why not just focus on remixing the other albums besides Imagine? Or is that still the only album that Yoko and now Sean apparently think matters. Most people seem to prefer POB and I personally would love to see Walls and Bridges get an ultimate edition. It’s so shitty. And as someone else pointed out, they JUST released a Gimme Some Truth compilation like 5 years ago lmao

Judging from the track list, they have probably remixed all the albums (again). And, writes Paul Hicks in the Deluxe Edition book: “Yoko is very keen that in making The Ultimate Mixes series, we achieve three things: remain faithful and respectful to the originals, ensure that the sound is generally sonically clearer overall, and increase the clarity of John’s vocals. ‘It’s about John,’ she says. And she is right. His voice brings the biggest emotional impact to the songs”.

“The combination of remixing from all the original first-generation multitrack sources and finishing in analogue has brought a whole new level of magic, warmth and clarity to the sound, along with a more detailed dynamic range and sound stage, and we really hope you enjoy the results.”
So, this is a series, starting with last year’s “Imagine” boxed set, continuing with this compilation, which may or may not work as a sampler of the series, and we guess “Plastic Ono Band” is next up. We notice that “Angel Baby” is included here, so perhaps we will even see a remixed Menlove Ave?

      • Cole says:

Ooo I hadn’t read any of that before now. That makes me feel better lol I guess in that case this compilation is like the Beatles 1+ release that was like a test run for the remixes in a way? I’m just really surprised they’re not cashing in on POB 50th. Especially after the new Let It Be film delay caused by covid.
