Another Wings collection

3LP edition

Looks like we have to wait forever on the archival treatment of the final two Wings albums “London Town” and “Back To The Egg”, because Paul just announced yet another Wings collection, to be released November 7th. Check out the various editions at Paul’s own webshop

You have the choice between 1CD, 2CD, 1LP and 3LP with or without additional merch… as well as a Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard.

We very nearly yawned so hard,  our jaws almost disjointed when we got this news today. One thing is for sure: Paul McCartney has no idea what Wings fans want. We want the archive editions we mentioned at the beginning, with concert footage from the 1979 tour and the Back To The Egg TV special.

Here are the recycled songs:

CD1

1. Band on the Run
2. Hi, Hi, Hi
3. Silly Love Songs
4. Letting Go
5. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five
6. Live and Let Die
7. Mamunia
8. Junior’s Farm
9. Helen Wheels
10. Some People Never Know
11. Let ‘Em In
12. Get on the Right Thing
13. Jet
14. My Love
15. Call Me Back Again

CD2

1. Getting Closer
2. Listen to What the Man Said
3. I’ve Had Enough
4. Love Is Strange
5. London Town
6. Arrow Through Me
7. Venus and Mars/Rock Show
8. She’s My Baby
9. Bluebird
10. Deliver Your Children (yay Denny!)
11. Let Me Roll It
12. Mull of Kintyre
13. Wild Life
14. C Moon
15. With a Little Luck
16. Soily
17. Goodnight Tonight

The 1CD and 1LP editions only have 12 songs, yes you guessed it, it’s the 12 biggest hits from this selection. The good news is that those who are just interested in the new surround mixes only need to buy the blu-ray, it is available on its own and not as part of a package.

Here is a promotional video for the new collection. From the glimpses it looks like some of the old promo videos have been re-transferred from the original films.

Does this mean a Broad Street box is off the table?

A little harsh, but fair…just be glad there’s surround mixes in HQ physical media, instead of a compressed or faux HQ streaming only option. Revolver never got that treatment (or respect)…

Nothing new here, I’m moving on.

It has to be said that between Ram and Flowers In The Dirt, Wings albums were frankly not very good. But they did manage some good singles so this issue makes sense. Fans clamour for WATSOS and BTTE which were amongst the worse but they are best left where they are as the commercial possibilities are poor (maybe even Macca isn’t keen on them?) and I do believe that record companies main motivation is money!

Back To The Egg is a favourite album for a lot of Wings fans, and also by people who weren’t necessarily fans but grew up with the album in their youth. It merited well in territories other than the U.K. and USA, too. Unfortunately, those are the markets Macca listens to criticism from. The same can be said for London Town. WATSOS is already out there in the Archival series.

Strongly agree. Back to the Egg wasn’t well received by some of the Rock Press when it was a high fashion statement to knock Paul/Wings. Same with London Town. There are several good gems on both of them. I would happily invest in archive editions of each album.

Like Pure McCartney, this is a Spotify playlist in a physical format. I have given up hoping I’ll see Archive Editions of London Town and Back To The Egg. Denny Laine’s memory deserves a better tribute.

  6. We undoubtedly still remember the last sentence of the review of the single ‘Ding Dong, Ding Dong’ by Roy Carr and Tony Tyler.

  7. Win Corr says:

This product is the beginning of a reset. If you are over 60 this is not aimed at you. Get used to it and let’s usher new fans in. Buy it if it suits you. If not just stream it.

Has anyone noticed that on some streamimg platforms (my reference is Amazon Music) new Dolby Atmos mixes have been uploaded? “Silly Love Songs, “Let’em In”, “London Town”, “Arrow Through Me”… Maybe they’ve been there for a long time, but I happened to discover it yesterday. Maybe it’s an advance of the new mixes. Maybe baby!
If somebody can provide any information about this, I’ll be so glad.
    Thanks in anticipation.

14 of the tracks in Dolby Atmos have been available in recent times on streaming, but 17 of them are unheard in this format, including tracks from un-reissued latter albums, such as ‘With A Little Luck’, ‘London Town’ and ‘I’ve Had Enough’ (all from “London Town”) and ‘Getting Closer’ and ‘Arrow Through Me’ (both from Back to the Egg). Those were remixed as part of the work done for the singles boxed set.

For me. I’ve got the hits I dont need this set. I would love LondanTown and Back to the egg.
