Two 1963 demos have surfaced

Two newly surfaced Beatles demos have been circulating on various forums in recent days, and now someone has uploaded cleaned up versions of them to YouTube for a wider audience. They are Paul McCartney’s demo of “Love of the Loved” and a band version of “Misery”, most likely recorded during a rehearsal at the Cavern Club in January 1963. Mike McCartney took a photo of the Beatles on that occasion, and we can see a tape recorder in that photo:

Later, an acetate record of “Misery” was made, which is the source of the recording that is now out. The acetate was probably made for Helen Shapiro, although her manager rejected the song, deeming the lyrics unsuitable, and it was picked up by another artist on the Shapiro Tour, Kenny Lynch. He recorded his version in February 1963 and it was released as a single on March 15.

The demo of “Love of the Loved” is mostly recorded by Paul on vocals and guitar, with some muted percussion in the background. It fades down, and has no real ending like it had on the recordings for Decca Records. It may have been faded out just for this release, though. The demo may have been made available to Cilla Black, in order for her and her musicians to learn the melody and the song, she released it as a single on September 27, 1963. The acetate was considered for release on “Anthology 1” in 1995, but was pulled just prior to finalisation of the track list.

Both tracks first appeared on disc 1 on the the recent beatleg “Anthology 4 Ultimate Edition” from Voo-Doo Records.

After these demos were released to a wider audience, and in these AI times, a lot of people have been skeptical about the authenticity of these demos or whether they are concocted by computer programs using artificial intelligence.

However, these recordings were already known to Beatles connoisseurs, for example, this version of “Love of the Loved” may have been what was on a demo record which was sold at auction at Christies in 1991, see the entry over at Beatlesource..

Mark Lewisohn treated his audience to an excerpt of this version of “Misery” during his lecture series “Evolver 63” in 2023.

Can you tell me where I can buy this 6 cd anthology set. Thanks.

  2. Brian David Hunt says:

It’s a four-disc set – the pictures you posted show the track listing for discs three and four twice, being the rear cover and the inside rear cover respectively.

  3. Quentin says:

Except for those two demos, what is new on this bootleg Anthology 4 ? What was not published on any Deluxe Box set of Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White ALbum, Abbey ROad and Let It Be ?

Isn’t it amazing, that, after all these years, new stuff keeps showing up? This is fantastic stuff!

I couldn’t agree more. This is like finding buried treasure and is far more exciting to me than any remasters, remixes or alternate takes

there are “new” surfaced bbc recordings too, from Here We Go October 1962 show… I guess they are from new sources or maybe already known stuff recently cleaned up

Oops! Didn’t read it wrong? Your image of disc 5 & 6 is an image of 3 & 4

  7. Kevin says:

    Order placed, thanks!

  8. John says:

Where can I order this Anthology 4 Ultimate from?

  9. Andrew Harris says:

There is a third in limited circulation among high end collectors of “I’ll Be On My Way” recorded around the same time as these at the Cavern early 63. I suspect only a matter of time until this gets out there.

  10. Jim says:

Why aren’t these on Anthology 4? There’s so much stuff they could have put on there but instead they just filled it out with previously released stuff. Giles Martin needs to be replaced. He’s an insider and totally out of touch with what Beatles fans want. His Revolver remix was practically mono too.

  11. Geert De Wilde says:

I really like this brisker version of Misery! ‘I’m the kind of girl, who used to love the world’ – brilliant! In this more upbeat version, I can hear Helen Shapiro doing this really well! Shame it didn’t happen!

What drives me nuts is the doubt that is brought on because of possible AI manipulation to make fake “demos” – especially in the case of Love of the Loved.

At some point will there be someone official to confirm these as the ones on the actual discs? And who could even do that? Ugh! I hate the doubt.

    • Michael B. says:

There’s plenty use of AI to correct demos or mixes on youtube, so many people tends to doubt about the authenticity of them. Also, a lot of people have known the bootlegs thanks to youtube, but they don’t know the history of bootlegs records, classic sets like Unsurpassed Masters, labels like Yellow Dog, or the Lewisohn books and what it’s been available, what’s not, what does exists, etc…

  13. Eric says:

Woo hoo! I emailed I Mark Lewishon directly and he confirmed both are genuine.
