Love Me Do anniversary mix-up

Word is that EMI have recalled all the stock of the 50th anniversary edition of the Love Me Do 7″ vinyl single
, because the version on the single is incorrect. Under strict instructions from Apple the stock is to be destroyed.

The single version as you probably know featured Ringo, and the album version featured Andy White with Ringo on the tambourine. The mistake is that they have supposedly put the album version on the new 7 inch.

At the moment EMI have no plans to replace it with the correct version.

This information came from one of the retailers who had already shipped their pre-orders, so there will be a number of lucky owners of this rarity when the post arrives tomorrow….

Meanwhile, we are wondering that perhaps Ringo may have had something to do about this, due to his own faulty memory. Whenever Ringo tells the story of Love Me Do he always has it backwards, that it was the version with Andy White on the drums which became the single, whereas the Ringo version was on the album. So perhaps it is the Ringo version on the new 7-inch and Ringo through Apple may have withdrawn it because he thinks it should have been the Andy White version…

Surely Andy White played the drums and the tambourine; Ringo made the toast and a few peace signs.

I don't usually visit your blog but came buy it via a website.
You really really couldn't make this degree of foul up in your imagination as one would of thought each restored file would be metatagged for quick identification before being cut to lacquer with that being checked before going ahead with the pressing run.
My preorder hasn't dispatched and it's showing as out of stock on Amazon UK.

I've ordered it through and haven't heard anything yet. No email about a cancellation. When I log in to my account, the order status says "processed".

Btw, I highly doubt that Ringo has something to do with it.

Amazon France postponed delivery until 9th october…

What I also think is strange is that on and amazon it says that the tracks on the 7" are the 2009 Remasters, even though the songs were just remastered specifically for the vinyl LP re-releases. Wouldn't it make more sense to include those if you made the effort the specifically remaster them for a vinyl release?

Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date:

Good – so, it looks as if the corrected replacement version will, after all, be forthcoming – albeit a little later than the actual anniversary! But heck, what's an extra week after 50 years?

No sign of my mispressed copy in the mail yet – please, Mr. Postman…!

  9. mightyquinn says:

Have heard ? E.M.i Have Destroyed ALL Copies Not Already sent ! And no plans for a re release ? Making it a collectible as The Sex Pistols EMI Single !

  10. Popper says:

I am starting to think some or all of this story is a wind-up. It seems a very unlikely blunder and there's not much about it in the news.

I went into an HMV in London today and they said they would probably have stock on the shelf in Oxford Street next Tuesday. The assistant suggested I order it online, which I have done this evening (£4 – free delivery!).

    We'll see what happens…

  11. Mandyque says:

It's absolutely true. My friends have an indie record shop and they have been instructed to return all copies of the single.

I got this email yesterday from digitalstores (official store)

    Dear Customer,

This is an automated email to let you know that the items below from order XXXXXX have been dispatched from our warehouse and should arrive soon.
    Shipped Items:
1 x Love Me Do Limited Edition 7" (50th Anniversary Limited Edition)

Does this mean that they already replaced it, or am I one of the lucky people to get the wrong version?

  13. wogew says:

It has been confirmed that it really is the Andy White edition on the anniversary single.

  14. bri286 says:

Amazon are still showing no availability – presumably they sold out of their original allocation and didn't ship them, so have transferred the orders over to the re-pressing which is now due next week. HMV are indeed advertising the single as being available from next week, so those will be the revised version too.

I'm hoping to receive my original order today – it would be interesting to find out how many copies of the original pressing made it out before the order to destroy them came though from EMI…

  15. Popper says:

There are copies on Ebay this morning, attracting lots of bids. Looks like some of the Andy White discs are out there now.

  16. mightyquinn says:

Got the Andy White Anniversary release ! Re- called Single ! If its rush Released Next week Again ?And As the anniv — was today ITS not an anniversary Release ? — + If The version is with Ringo on drums How can it be a replica of the original Release ? Typical Mess ! by E.M.I ! – –

  17. Stephane says:

I have received an email from Amazon telling it will be available on the 29th october. Delivery date, probably on 2nd november. Well, there's no hurry anyway. I'll turn 50 on the 30th as I was born 25 days after the original release so it'll come on my birthday. Not bad…

  18. mightyquinn says:

Hi Stephanie , Nice Timing for you ( Best Wishes for The End of the month )%0 is the NEW 21 you Know ! ! BUT For E.M.I to mess this up is Amazing ! No Matter whenever They Release it now / The anniversary's Gone ? ? Making The Leaked copies another BIG Beatle Collectible ! + frustration for Fans around The World ? Why They–( The Suits ! @ E.M.I Never Consult Genuine Fans Is a Mystery ( Tour !) Hope you get a Copy for your B"Day ?

  19. Stephane says:

Hi Mightyquinn! Thanks for your message.
Me too I hope it will come on time…if EMI gets out of this mess.

I pre ordered my copy on Ebay UK and was nervous because thought would not have my copy to learn that they had been canceled, but the seller notified me that my copy was sent one day before launch. People living in the UK who made the purchase with the same vendor have described the operation as successful and are very satisfied with the seller. I'm waiting for my copy of Love Me Do arrive to my country!

  21. bri286 says:

MThe retailer who first broke the news about the mix-up has e-mailed me to advise that:

"No more news yet on a repress of the Love Me Do single with the correct version on it"

So – there seem to be lots of different dates for the delivery of the re-press (if at all)… Let's see who gets theirs first!

  22. MP3J says:

i got mine yesterday…the website i bought from mailed their stock before the recall 🙂

Also….the catalog number on the b-side is incorrect! R4714??? FAIL! lol

  23. mightyquinn says:

Another strange twist / As mentioned above The B side cataloge Number Is Wrong -it is in fact of another George Martin produced Artist on parlophone Matt Monroe + his Single " Portrait of My Love "" Which appears on a B.leg ""Hot As Sun " by the Beatles from an old E.M.i tape ! ?

  24. bri286 says:

News from the retailer from whom I bought my copies of "Love Me Do":

"After that small error on the initial pressing, EMI will be making the correct version available on October 26th. Limited to 6000 copies only."

No doubt those retailers who did not distribute their stock of the faulty version will honour their orders using the corrected version.

  25. shekespeare says:

Amazon is announcing that EMI has given the new date for the release of Love Me Do properly edited by October 22. I'll save some money to buy that version too as well as the Ebay seller that I bought my copy made shipments before EMI re called, now will have a good game of the same singles, correct and incorrect press!

Nothing in my hands at the moment so, last friday I wrote an email to Digitalstores asking about my copy…
    here my email:
    Hi there
I am still waiting for my item (XXXXXX)…do you know if I should wait more days?
thanks a lot for your time

    kind regards
ps: I have received an e-mail saying "dispatched" last friday…but I've got nothing yet

    Dear Sebastian,

    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry to hear that you have not received your order which we dispatched to you on 4th October 2012

We will happily resend or issue a credit voucher for the order but as you have chosen ‘standard’ shipping, as opposed to ‘courier’ shipping, there is no tracking number allocated to the order and so we do require a period of time to have passed from the date your order was shipped. This is to allow for items to be returned to us from the post office or courier. There is also a huge variance in delivery times depending on your location, and we must apply the same policy to all of our customers.

The most common reason for non-delivery is that the postal carrier could not fit the parcel through your letterbox, in which case they should leave a note to let you know to pick it up from the depot. However, it has been our experience that sometimes the note gets forgotten or discarded, so if your parcel has not arrived, please check your local postal sorting office to make sure they are not holding it for you.

If your package still has not arrived after 10 working days from the shipping date, and you have checked with your local depot, please contact us again and we will give you instructions on how to proceed.

I hope that your order arrives shortly.

    Kind Regards

Would be great if the user "Donny" post if he received his copy of Love Me Do from Digital Stores, due I can't contact him….At the moment, I still waiting and from DS claim that they sent the copy and MAYBE post office lost it (….)but, they ask me again my address to check if it's O.k.
It looks like they're trying to keep this "mail feedback" until next Monday….. when the new copy will be release…

This is the email form DIGITAL STORES.

This order was shipped to you on 4th October, as per the email we sent you on 4th October to inform you of this.
We can only deduce that the postal service lost your order.
Pleas can you confirm your original delivery address so we can both authorise your refund and make sure that the order was sent to the correct address.

    Kind Regards

I just wanna know if they will send to me the new copy., refund my money or what. The odd thing here is, today arrived one used copy of love me do (1982 re-issue) that I've bought through ebay WITHOUT any problem…

  28. Stephane says:

Alright, here we go. Today, I have received 3 emails from

The first one said the item's release is postponed until further information.
The second one was announcing a new delivery date: 27th october.

The third is claiming that my record has been sent today.

What else can I say? I'm waiting for friday…

  29. bri286 says:

Well, the reissued 7" is now available, and mine arrived yesterday, presumably with the Ringo version of "Love Me Do" on it, although I haven't had the change to play it yet in order to check.

The silver printing on the label is brighter than the withdrawn version, so it looks better although it's still not as bright as the original. Unfortunately, the serial number on the b-side is still wrong…you'd have thought that they would have taken the opportunity to correct this, wouldn't you?

  30. Stephane says:

They didn't put it right. B-side is 45-R 4714 instead of 4949. Haven't checked if it's the good master.
