Let It Be 2021 – images

The 2021 Let It Be boxed set

Here are some images and track lists of the upcoming “Let It Be audio” releases for 2021, due out October 15. Prematurely posted on the Spanish Amazon site, we now know the contents as well as what the box consists of. Later leaks have given us info about the 2 disc version and the vinyl boxed set. The image below lists the contents of the “Super DeLuxe” 5CD + 1Blu-ray edition. The blu-ray has no video content, but high resolution files of the new mix “Let It Be” tracks, in stereo and several surround sound options.

The “Let It Be” album has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo, 5.1 surround DTS, and Dolby Atmos. All the new “Let It Be” releases feature the new stereo mix of the album as guided by the original “reproduced for disc” version by Phil Spector and sourced directly from the original session and rooftop performance eight-track tapes.

The Super Deluxe collections also feature 27 previously unreleased session recordings, a four-track “Let It Be” EP, and the never before released 14-track “Get Back” stereo LP mix compiled by engineer Glyn Johns in May 1969.

Additionally, the Super Deluxe editions feature a 100 page hard-back book with an introduction by Paul McCartney, extensive notes and track-by-track recording information and many previously unseen photos, personal notes, tape box images and more.

The book has the following chapters:

• Foreword by Paul McCartney
• Introduction by Giles Martin
• Glyn Johns remembers
• Everybody had a hard year/Everybody had a good time
The myth and reality of Let it be Sessions
• What do we want to know
• Track by track
• Rehearsals and Apple jams
• Get Back to Let It Be

The book is of course not identical to the new “Get Back”-book, which is available separately, nor is it identical to the old “Get Back” book from the 1970 “Let It Be” boxed set.

The back of the vinyl box

No blu-ray with the surround etc mixes, we’re afraid – just like they were also missing on the vinyl editions of the recent George Harrison releases of “All Things Must Pass”. A shame that vinyl lovers will have to also get the SuperDeLuxe CD edition in order to enjoy the songs in surround sound.

  1. Mikko Suhonen says:

Apparently the size of the box is closer to that of White Album anniversary edition than the other two.

  2. Bob says:

With the amount of crap they recorded in January 69 with weird voices and accents, I’m not gonna complain about this track listing.
Those types of silly / weird rehearsals and takes are more enjoyable while watching the footage and I’m sure we’ll see plenty of it in “Get Back”

  3. TJ says:

We’re all die-hards here, so I know we’re all excited about this. And personally, I have always loved this “new phase” record”.

But a Disc 5 “EP” of 2 Glyn Johns mixes that could easily be tacked onto the Glyn Johns version as “bonus tracks” – not to mention mixes of the two singles, which could’ve been tacked on elsewhere – is pretty gross. It’s gonna clock in at about 15 minutes long! There are hours upon hours of unreleased music, some of which might not be great, but it does exist. Hell, tack on a remix of “Let It Be…Naked” and “Fly on The Wall”! But what’s the point of a 4-song EP CD in a boxed set???

If the above photo is accurate, it can’t help but feel like a missed opportunity…one which I’ll still spend a few hundred dollars on for both the LP and CD sets, because that’s what we do!

  4. B4Y says:

The ‘Let It Be’ album has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo, 5.1 surround DTS, and Dolby Atmos. All the new ‘Let It Be’ releases feature the new stereo mix of the album as guided by the original “reproduced for disc” version by Phil Spector and sourced directly from the original session and rooftop performance eight-track tapes. The Super Deluxe collections also feature 27 previously unreleased session recordings, a four-track ‘Let It Be’ EP, and the never before released 14-track ‘Get Back’ stereo LP mix compiled by engineer Glyn Johns in May 1969. • Win Corr says:

Seriously? Books that are out there reveal way too much. The bootlegs reveal too much. This box set has nothing on it. It just doesn’t. Go Back and fix it. All these years fans waiting for this moment. I am just glad Glyn John’s gets his due!

  5. JOSE RENATO says:

Very disappointed. Poor material and ridiculous single. And the PJ Film?????????? Thanks Apple for bad work!!!!!!!!!

  6. Dave collins says:

    Looks like a let down

  7. Winston says:

One disc for just 4 tracks??? What a waste. Why they didn’t put the entire rooftop gig in that disc??? Apple and their insane decisions.

    • Arno says:

Remember that Universal has the rights to the audio and Disney to the video, and they lose a selling point if Rooftop is sold as audio before being shown on video. I don’t know of any filmcompany that offer the sound to their biggest rival Universal to be released before being shown.

      • Shelley says:

Then if Disney doesn’t want the rooftop audio out before the video, the box set could’ve been delayed till after the PJ doc is aired. There’d still be plenty of time for Christmas sales.

        • James Peet says:

Yes! They’ve missed the 50th anniversary of LIB by over a year, so holding it back until after the new films have been shown makes more sense.

Does this mean that there may be a “Get Back” album released containing the entire rooftop performance?

    • diboland says:

Is the Album not the Movie

    • Robert Spinello says:

they’re saving it for the DVD why else.

  8. Shelley says:

Hate to complain, but damn, I thought this set would contain 2 DVDs (the original film and the new Peter Jackson). Instead, a 4 song disc with no complete rooftop audio? I want the original movie on a physical disc.

    • Win Corr says:

It’s OK to complain because it sucks bad and hurts too. It’s not a hard job to this box content wise if you know the material that is out there; I mean even knowing that the Peter Jackson film has the rooftop audio which is fine and truly exciting. The box does not tell the story of the album sessions. It has no material. The original movie on disc with original soundtrack on disc would be absolutely necessary now. But it does not help this box set.

    • Robert Spinello says:

      GET BACK DVD..in due time.

  9. mpb says:

disc 5 = beatles true feelings about the people buying their records?

  10. FREDERICK 53 says:

Agree with comments. Plus full length version of dig it, 2 guitar solos version of let it be.John,s third man theme, which Mccartney himself liked. Not fade away plus countless jams Chuck Berry covers etc. Which bootleggers have bought out for years. Should have been included. The list is endless. Enough to surpass songs included on white album deluxe. Plus Twickenham sessions would have better audio than quarrymen home recordings from anthology 1. It is history like to see what other songs other people would like to have included.

  11. Michael Boyce says:

Still no word on it on Amazon! No pre-order date, nothing!

  12. nateboy2 says:

Insane that there’s just an EP disc. Plus, if they’re remixing the single version of Let It Be, why isn’t there a remix of the single version of Get Back? It has a distinctly different coda on the end. Why leave that off? Was there not enough room to throw another 3:30 onto the EP disc? Pathetic.

    • Shad Radna says:

Both were remixed by Giles Martin for the 2015 version of 1. Maybe he wanted another go at masking the piano just after “I wake up to the sound of music” (is that an edit point?). Or maybe Paul wanted him to.

  13. Blakey says:

How come the apple on the back isn’t red, like the 1970 release and the 2009 version?
Also, the ‘EP CD’ could have been filled with the instrumentals a from Phil Spector and Richard Hewson’s orchestral and choral sessions? There are orchestral and instrumental tracks on the Abbey Road box (like ‘Something’ and ‘Carry That Weight’), so why none on ‘Let It Be’?

And where is ”You Know My Name (Look Up The Number’?

    • Glenn Milam says:

I believe that only the US version had a red apple. I used to think it was to symbolize that the Apple had “ripened”, but apparently it meant it was a soundtrack – go figure.

  14. Lee says:

Instead of the EP, Disc 5 should be Let it Be Naked, which is better than the original album, has a better track listing, includes Don’t Let Me Down, has a better version of Long and Winding Road, and removes all of the nasty passive-aggressive comments by John. I guess Paul had to back down once again even tho he was absolutely right about Let it Be Naked.

    • Danny says:

Glyn Johns mix sort of covers the Let it Be naked angle i think – certainly in terms of not having all the Phil spector stuff. And i love all the between track banter and John’s humorous comments. Plus Let It Be Naked is out there if you want it so why put it in the box? I agree though there could be better options for the disc – the full rooftop? – and the original movie should be inc too

    • Win Corr says:

The EP is sort of to show us the key tracks before Spector touched it. If that’s the case they could have dug deeper there to show where other stuff came from like the rest of his cheezy over dubs and spoken words etc… The box should of highlighted George Harrison’s rambling outtakes a bit more at least. All the music on Sweet Apple Trax and the Get Back Journals 1 and II…The Thirty Days series. OMG!

  15. rick says:

So did I understand correctly there’s is also going to be a 2 CD version? Cause I’m sure that this boxset will cost $150-$200.

  16. Blakey says:

The huge amount of stuff that”s on the ‘Thirty Days’ bootleg could have been cherry picked and restored for this set. But it hasn’t been. There is also no full length ‘Dig It’ and the the version of ‘All Things Must Pass’ where John, Paul and George all sing a line from the first verse would have been a lovely touch. No promo films either. The rare ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ video, where John’s beard is now growing and he has the mustard coloured sweater on could have been included. Even ‘Jamming With Yoko’ would have made the set more interesting and would have shown how they reacted when George left. But I dare say those lovely folk at Disney have put their corporate money obsessed jackboot on top of Apple with a list of dos and don’ts. It’s obvious that’s why the rooftop audio is missing and there is no film footage. We will also be very lucky to see the original 1970 film of Let It Be see the light of day.

I ‘ate you, Butler! Get that bus out!

    • Shelley says:

All I really wanted was a DVD of the original film. But I’m also having doubts we’ll see it.

    • Win Corr says:

Agreed. This box is crap. So disappointed. Makes you want to cry…as a real fan. Like being stabbed in the heart. Wow! I am sure Peter Jackson’s series will reveal more but he even said there is less music than expected in his documentary.

      • Robert Spinello says:

youre never gonna get the same amount as the bootles because a lot of it is shit.

        • Tom W says:

That is absolutely true…..if one listens to many of the sessions bootlegs that were out, it is clear that the unrehearsed and at times half hearted attempts to play music were clearly and often heard and it wasn’t really interesting or entertaining. Lots of poorly played unfinished oldies that didn’t gel; early run throughs of the LIB material. It like the 27 minute “Helter Skelter” that everyone was expecting to be so wonderful…it wasn’t.

        • Glenn Milam says:

Agreed. I’ve tried several times to distill my boots from that era down to something that would be enjoyable to listen to. Unfortunately, once you weed out the crap, there isn’t much left. Even pulled out my counterfeit copy of the Glyn Johns mix last night. I see why it wasn’t released.

  17. Juan says:

Perhaps the PJ documentary’s soundtrack will have more outtakes and the rooftop concert, hopefully.

  18. Win Corr says:

Where are the outtakes? This box set really has absolutely nothing on it. Not what I was expecting. Maybe it’s because George Martin was not a fan of it. I read some where that it’s like a marriage where they realized that it was just to wild to be teenagers again and they needed to get more conservative and do something like Abbey Road instead. There is no material in this box set. I have all the bootlegs. I hope it’s all in the Peter Jackson/Disney Box and re-release of the original movie. Because this is super skimpy. I am so glad Glyn Johns gets his due, That’s the bright spot. Read Bruce Spizer’s book which at least showed what at minimum this box should be,

  19. Shad Radna says:

Thankfully there’s a picture disc version of the vinyl too…

  20. Let It Be was, is and will always be a scratch on the soul of the Beatles. Sad and disappointed they couldn’t rise above themselves.

  21. vern gibbons says:

complain all you want but no matter what and i mean no matter what apple/beatles put out, no matter the price, no matter the quality, you’re buying it. pt barnum

  22. Ronald Ankers says:

We will have the original mix of the Get Back album, the mixes of Across The Universe and I Me Mine prepared for the second version of the album and several well chosen outtakes and a few Twickenham rehearsals. Discs 2 and 3 both seem to be in chronological order. Disc 2 songs are all Apple, culminating in an outtake from 3 January 1970. It seems they are intended to be limited to outtakes of the songs on the original Get Back album, with I Me Mine as a bonus. Disc 3 only contains a few of the Twickenham sessions. I see both those CDs will each fit on one LP. The George Harrison demos of 26 May 1970 have taken up 2 LPs in the All Things Must Pass box set. It’s A Pity(!) there couldn’t be more on discs 2 and 3, or even an extra disc, perhaps containing only songs from Twickenham. I can see sense in having a separate disc (LP/CD) containing the original Get Back album with its original intended sleeve. An EP makes sense as well, containing those particular 4 songs. The single version of Get Back should be available on the Get Back Album. As for the original Let It Be film, if much of it will be included in the 6 hours documentary, maybe it will never see the light of day again. It will be interesting to see how much of the final “Apple performances” of 31 January will be shown in the documentary film. It seems Let It Be, with the original guitar solo, is the last track on Disc 3. That will be the fourth released version of the same recording, each with a different guitar solo by George!

  23. RG says:

Pepper was remixed because stereo was an afterthought. The band wasn’t even involved in the original stereo mixing. Their first thought was mono, even in 1967. But those conditions no longer applied in 1970. Yes, there was conflict on Spector’s work but even Lennon said let the public see the Beatles in their imperfections, warts and all. So what problem did Giles Martin attempt to fix this time? Just because you can remix something doesn’t mean you should. And I’m particularly not happy about these remix’s replacing the original works of art. Are you listening Dhani Harrison?

    • Shelley says:

They’re not replacements, just alternatives. I’m sure Giles and Dhani are very aware that listeners are accustomed to 50+ years of hearing Beatles and solo Beatles music a certain way. The original mixes of Let It Be, All Things Must Pass, are still readily available. None of these box sets are being promoted as the definitive version. Well, with the arguable exception of Lennon’s, which utilizes the term “ultimate mix” on his reissues.

      • admin says:

And don’t forget, they remixed all the Lennon albums in 2000 only to revert back to the old mixes for the remastered series.

      • RG says:

No, they’re replacements. A quick look around shows that the pre anniversary releases of all things must pass and abbey road (and most likely Pepper and the white album) are no longer readily available from major retailers and sellers. Yes, there are stray copies from Amazon “sellers” but not from Amazon proper.

And I am still waiting for someone to tell me what the problem was with the original LIB mix that Martin fixed.

I suggest you listen to the Bobby Whitlock video where he talks about how badly Dhani messed up All Things on vinyl.

        • Shelley says:

But on the streaming platforms, standard and anniversary remixes/remasters are available. Any physical release in this day and age has to be seen as limited edition. Hard copies are not going to remain in print, unfortunate as that is.

          • RG says:

People wanting to become musicians are fast becoming a limited edition themselves, now that streaming services pay the artist a fraction of the their former income from physical sales. Take a listen to what David Crosby has to say on the matter.

  24. dodl says:

I too, am underwhelmed by this box set. But, the lack of jams or covers is just the corporate greed stepping in by not wanting to pay royalties to the fine folks who own Chuck Berry’s publishing, and all the other publishing companies for songs they covered in rehearsals.
This was the perfect time and place to put the original Let It Be film on DVD.
I do agree that the Rooftop performance should have been included here, as well.
This is my “me too” post.

  25. Robert Spinello says:

Nice job. The concert will obviously be on the Get Back DVD

  26. Terry says:

Wow. Beatles fans are a tough crowd to please. They’re chucking out an EP of four new tracks, and people are complaining. Two full discs of session outtakes and people are complaining. Glyn Johns’ Get Back LP – officially unavailable for more than 50 years and people are complaining. I am gobsmacked. Even the immense TV project which is upcoming and should be fantastic – people complaining about the absence of the original, mediocre Let It Be movie. Really, Beatle People – let’s celebrate this moment – fantastic, exciting new product and plenty of it. A cause for celebration, surely.

    • Shelley says:

It may be a mediocre film to you, but I happen to love it. It is no more “mediocre” than Help! or Magical Mystery Tour which are readily avaiIable. I am excited about, and thankful for, all the upcoming new product. But at a price tag of close to $200 Cdn (plus the $60 Get Back book) I think I have a right to question one of the discs containing only 4 tracks when another 60 mins of music could’ve fit on there.

    • Brian from Canada says:

The difference is that, unlike the previous anniversary releases, this one has most of its material available on bootlegs — plus a feature film — that fans are not only well aware of but familiar enough with to know what the key tracks they want on it are.

Personally, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for the complete version of “Dig It,” the fast version of “Two Of Us,” the film version of “Besame Mucho” or outtake “Suzy Parker” because they’ve been around for so long and are so beloved.

The four track EP isn’t new stuff, some of it is from previous years. The complaint you’re dropping close to $200 for a box set and getting an EP that could have been added to the end of one of the other discs (making it cheaper and/or offering more room) is a VERY legitimate complaint; if you want to mark it as an EP for Black Friday RSD, then simply release them as an EP separate after the box.

The ONLY reason I can see the EP here is to enhance the EP set on vinyl later on, when they put it out like they did the singles set — adding newer material after.

Glyn Johns’ version is the only highlight of the set. When you have a 14 disc “best of” sessions set (The Get Back Years) and a 30+ disc Nagra reels collection out there, 2 discs that don’t even scrape the surface don’t match up.

Nor does the lack of the original film on a blu-ray that definitely had space… or the clips from the film that were used as promo films. Nor does the lack of “Don’t Let Me Down” in 5.1 on that blu-ray despite it likely being able to be mixed for it. Nor does the absence of “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)” from the set.

Nor, incidentally, not reproducing the BOOK from the original release. You’d thank that would have been a no brainer too.

  27. mpb says:

suggestion for a future post… the history of beatles music price-gouging.
while the beatles were (usually) keen to give their fans value for money. for instance, in the UK beatles lps (usually) did not include single tracks on LP releases, so as not to ‘force’ fans to pay twice for the same thing. however, sometimes their music marketing was less considerate of their fans’ wallets.
here’s a partial list: (never mind who’s fault it is, this is just from the consumer perspective)
    – 1964-66 US releases albums with 11 songs (including previously released singles) instead of 14 like in the UK.
    – 1965 US Help! soundtrack has only 7 Beatles tracks and costs $1 more than typical lps for the ‘deluxe’ gatefold sleeve (featuring backwards-printed photos, dumb text)
    – 1966 Collection of Beatles Oldies lp offered 1 new song for UK market: “Bad Boy” …
    – 1969 yellow sub lp
    – 2012 while no record company ever had the guts (or “vision”?) to package a cassette and an 8-track of the same album in 1 inflated package, the magical mystery tour multi-disc box set included the same content duplicated on both a dvd and a blu-ray.
    – 2017 sgt pepper multi-disc box set included the same audio 3x: cd, dvd and blu ray.
    – 2019 abbey road 4-disc set (also including repeated material) has only the main album in high resolution, but not the studio sessions audio. the studio session audio in high resolution is available only as part of the deluxe digital download. however, the digital download used a dynamics-compressed master of the main album. to have all the music in best quality the dedicated beatles fan must buy the set twice.
    – 2020 lennon plastic ono band 2x lp : $60
    – 2021 Let It Be 4 lp + 1 ep set : $200 digital disc release of same marketed as 6 discs instead of 1 blu ray (or 1 dvd, which it could have easily been). i presume a separate digital download release will feature exclusive high-resolution content.

    what else?

There was a compilation LP, either late 70s or early 80s, that I bought with a trimmed Hey Jude, only 4 mins and change long. Can’t remember the title offhand, but certainly felt gypped.

    • Brian from Canada says:

How about Paul’s Egypt Station suitcase that didn’t have all the extras on one CD (it split them across spots), a USB that had clips of the songs, puzzles, lithos, etc. for over $500?

How about George’s All Things Must Pass uber set that’s over $1000 in some countries for a crate containing resin figures and the same vinyl set?

Universal has definitely profited from The Beatles: less content, more price.

Given how Disney is NOT releasing a home video version of McCartney 3…2…1… I expect that it will be limited release at best for a Peter Jackson’s Get Back home video release too.

Got to laugh at all the comments on here about being underwhelmed. Of course this isn’t the definitive release that everyone wants.
For most people who dont have access to bootlegs this is enough for now. With no new material being recorded The Beatles/Apple are going to hold stuff back for future releases. Once everything is officially released the barrel will be empty so they’re going to ration what’s left in the archive

It should have been original album ,glyn John’s mix rehearsal takes and apple rooftop show

I noticed on the newly released 2021 mix of the song, “Let It Be”, a couple anomalies. One is that at 1:14 (on YouTube) the reverbed high hat hit is mistimed. It hits slightly late. This isn’t true on the 1970 release. It’s a horrible edit. Secondly, in the fadeout, there’s an errant guitar note also not present on the 1970 release. Incredibly sloppy editing on Giles’ part. Phil Spector got it right, and he didn’t even have pro-tools and months to mix it.

  31. Glenn Milam says:

Just noticed that we don’t appear to be getting “No Pakistanis” or “Back to Commonwealth” in these sets. That’s probably best. I don’t know how many people would catch the satirical nature of these in today’s cancel culture climate.

  32. James Peet says:

I think that whatever the Beatles/Apple put out, in terms of super-duper deluxe editions, they are never going to satisfy everybody. I was disappointed with elements of Anthology, in particular the “outfakes” and removal of backing vocals here and there (Strawberry Fields Forever – take 1, though the backing vocals have now been returned on the 2017 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band package.

The only thing I’m not happy about with this Let It Be release is the 12″ single. There could have been a lot more added to it, both on vinyl and (most certainly) CD. They seem to be unable to put together an archival project, where you may have multiple takes of a song, breakdowns, etc. They need to employ a fan to put tracklists forward, and who knows what is available and what long standing “legacy” fans want. I’m sure most people who post here regularly could do a good job.

  33. Glenn Milam says:

It’s true that this is probably the most bootlegged sessions in history. Many of us already have the Nagra rolls in one form or another. As such, I don’t really know what they have proper multitrack recordings of. I’m buying it for the 5.1 mix. And it will be interesting to see how close my counterfeit version of the Glyn Johns mix is to the real thing.
